FFXIV: A Realm Reborn Hits 325K Concurrent Players, Will Implement AFK Kick Feature

Following 10 hours of server maintenance, many of the critical issues Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn players experienced during their first week have been remedied. By adding a few worlds and increasing the total logins per world from 5,000 to between 7,300 to 7,800, even the most popular servers have become easy to log in to.

Allowing more players to log in has also boosted the record number of concurrent logins from 225,000 to a staggering 325,000. Game producer and director Naoki Yoshida says that the number is still growing.

In an effort to combat any future issues when and if the game grows, Yoshida has confirmed that an AFK logout timer is in the works. While it’s standard for most modern MMOs to kick players who aren’t active in the game world for 30 minutes or more, Square Enix hasn’t been a fan of the system in the past. It never implemented one in Final Fantasy XI—perhaps because it’d destroy the bazaar system—,and it was planning to do the same with FFXIV: A Realm Reborn. However, desperate times call for desperate measures.

For those, like me, who have been separated by their friends due to the character limitation on just about every world, Yoshida promised that server transfers are being developed. They should appear in the next couple weeks.
