We’re not sure what recipe calls for bacon and vodka, but one thief was apparently so obsessed with these two items that she tried to steal them from two grocery stores on the same day. On June 4, police officers in Roseville, California, responded to a report of a woman who had fled from one store with bacon and vodka. She then tried to pull the same stunt again at another store before she was hauled off by police.
39-year-old woman stole at least 14 packages of bacon
Police responded to a theft in progress involving 39-year-old Shanae Watkins who had allegedly stolen six bottles of Tito’s Vodka and 14 packages of thick-cut Oscar Mayer bacon in her shoulder bag at a Bel Air grocery store, according to a post from the Roseville Police Department on their official Facebook page.
Watkins tried to hide the stolen items while paying for several unrelated items at self-checkout, which police say is “a common tactic for thieves,” but she faced two problems. Not only was her card declined, but the grocery store’s loss prevention team had already noticed the bacon and vodka in her bag. Though they were able to confront the thief, she fled the store with the items.
Throwing caution to the wind, the woman then tried to continue her spree by swiping even more vodka and bacon, plus some reusable bags, from a Safeway. However, Watkins was trying to steal from the same place twice. Store staff recognized the thief from prior incidents and alerted police. Officers who were still investigating the first theft quickly sped over to the Safeway and waited for Watkins to emerge before taking her into custody.
While thefts under $950 are considered petty theft in California, those with two prior theft convictions can face felony charges under Penal Code 666.1. Watkins was booked in South Placer County Jail and arrested for two counts of 666.1 PC and one count of Possession of Stolen Property.
