Walton Goggins and Chris Pratt also being eyed as leads for Danny McBride’s G.I. Joe, per rumors
According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, Chris Pratt and Walton Goggins are in the running to replace Hemsworth in McBride’s G.I. Joe feature along with Cooper. Pratt famously has portrayed Peter Quill / Star-Lord in the MCU, starring opposite both Hemsworth and Cooper in multiple projects. Meanwhile, Goggins played Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and the Wasp and voiced an alternate version of Burch in the Disney+ animated anthology series What If…?
As with Cooper, Goggins has worked with McBride in the past. He played Baby Billy Freeman in the HBO satirical crime comedy series The Righteous Gemstones, which McBride created and starred in. He also portrayed Lee Russell in McBride’s Vice Principals, which aired on HBO between 2016 and 2017.
Amid all these casting rumors, recent reports revealed that McBride will also direct the G.I. Joe feature alongside writing it. This project marks a significant turn in McBride’s career as a filmmaker and screenwriter, and he has acknowledged that, clarifying that it won’t be a comedy and that there would be “kind of suspense and action.”
Pratt is one of the biggest movie stars today. Besides the Marvel movies, he has starred in The Tomorrow War and The Terminal List and voiced the titular character in the Super Mario movies. Meanwhile, Cooper has established himself as a celebrated actor and filmmaker, receiving Oscar nods for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, American Sniper, A Star is Born, and Maestro. As for Goggins, the Emmy-nominated actor has demonstrated his acting skills in projects such as Justified, The Righteous Gemstones, Fallout, The White Lotus, and The Hateful Eight.
McBride’s G.I. Joe movie currently doesn’t have a release date.
