Chris Hemsworth Reportedly Leaves G.I. Joe Movie, but an MCU Actor May Replace Him

A new report says that Chris Hemsworth has exited the new G.I. Joe movie, and another Marvel star could potentially replace him in the film. It was originally reported in May 2024 that the Thor actor was in talks to star in the movie. Notably, Danny McBride is developing the project for Paramount Pictures.

Bradley Cooper could replace Chris Hemsworth on new G.I. Joe movie

According to Nexus Point News, Bradley Cooper might replace Hemsworth on McBride’s G.I. Joe movie. If that is indeed the case, this will not be McBride and Cooper’s first collaboration. The latter previously made a guest appearance as Elijah Gemstone on McBride’s HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones. Meanwhile, Cooper and Hemsworth are part of the expansive MCU cabal, with Cooper voicing Rocket Raccoon in those movies.

During a recent interview, McBride shared details about his take on the G.I. Joe franchise. “I’ve written one, yes. I’m stoked about it,” he confirmed, adding, “I’m really fired up about the script. Paramount seems fired up about it. Hopefully, we’re shooting it next year.”

McBride also revealed that he had been a fan of the franchise since childhood. “It was definitely the cartoons and the comics,” he said. “G.I. Joe was my thing when I was a kid. I liked that more than Star Wars, more than anything. I loved G.I. Joe. I still have all the characters.” The Vice Principals co-creator revealed that his original idea was for a Dreadnoks movie, but Paramount declined and instead asked him to help launch the franchise. “And I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I’ll have an angle for that,'” he recalled.

As mentioned above, reports about Hemsworth’s potential casting in the project began circulating in early 2024. These reports stated that this movie is a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover.

Cooper has garnered widespread recognition for his performances in Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, American Sniper, A Star Is Born, Maestro, and the Marvel movies. At the time of this article’s composition, Danny McBride’s G.I. Joe movie doesn’t have a release date.
