Sometimes people make the silliest mistakes during an everyday traffic stop. In an incident that was caught on bodycam, an officer with the Lilburn Police Department asked a driver to hand over his driver’s license when he was also given a plastic bag of meth. Briefly stunned, the officer knew what he had to do next.
Driver makes dumb mistake during routine traffic stop
During a routine traffic stop on June 26 at around 7:48 a.m., a Lilburn officer stopped a black vehicle for running past a stop sign. He asked the driver to show him his license, prompting him to search for it in the front seat.
After finding and giving the card to the officer, the driver is asked where he’s going and he vaguely responds with, “To work.” However, while handing over his license, he leaves a small plastic bag in his hand and quickly tries to hide it in the side of the door. But the officer notices the bag and asks what that is.
It takes the driver a few seconds to reply. “Oh, sorry, this is from last night. There’s nothing in there,” he says as he gives the officer the bag in question. As the cop identifies the drugs in the bag, the driver apologizes again.
Unfazed, the officer promptly orders the man to step out of the vehicle. The man laughs at his own predicament and hands over a card as he is told again to step out of the car again.
A post of the incident from the Lilburn Police Department’s official Facebook page reveals that the driver “earned a trip to the Gwinnett County Jail.” Indeed, “you can’t make this stuff up.”
Several commenters poked fun at the driver, with one user saying, “He said I’m sorry this is from last night like it matters.” Another wrote, “Drugs are bad, m’kay….”
