Tom Hanks is heading back to baseball with a new movie now set for summer 2027. Sony has decided on a July release, giving Hanks another sports drama to anchor. The project also reunites him with filmmaker Marielle Heller and adds another baseball title to a career already tied to one of the genre’s most loved films.
Tom Hanks’ The Comebacker gets 2027 release date
Sony has scheduled The Comebacker for July 30, 2027. The release puts the film in a late-summer slot and sets up a same-day box-office clash with Paramount’s A Quiet Place III. The movie was first reported by Deadline and comes after Sony won the project over two other studios that were also in the mix.
The movie brings Tom Hanks back to baseball stories 35 years after A League of Their Own. This time, fans will see him as a pitching coach helping a major league pitcher whose whole life gets thrown off after a line drive smacks him in the head during a game. The film comes from a Dave Eggers short story, with Marielle Heller turning it into a screenplay.
This isn’t the first time Tom Hanks and director Marielle Heller have teamed up. Fans might remember they worked together on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, where Hanks took on the role of Fred Rogers.
That performance even earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Now they’re back for The Comebacker, but this time Hanks is involved behind the scenes too. His production company, Playtone, is producing the film alongside Leah Holzer, with Major League Baseball officially partnering on the project.
Hanks spent decades delivering one memorable performance after another, making him one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. He even pulled off back-to-back Best Actor Oscar wins with Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Over the years, fans have seen him in everything from Big and Saving Private Ryan to Cast Away, Catch Me If You Can, and Captain Phillips. He is also the voice behind Woody in the Toy Story movies.
