The future of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen remains uncertain, but a new report suggests one of the sequel trilogy’s central characters could be preparing for a return. John Boyega, who played former Stormtrooper Finn, has reportedly had talks with Lucasfilm about reprising his role in an upcoming project.
John Boyega rumored to have met with Lucasfilm for Finn’s return
The report came from industry insider Daniel Richtman, especially at a pivotal moment for the franchise. Lucasfilm is undergoing a big leadership transition following Kathleen Kennedy’s leaving the post of president.
Creative oversight now falls to Dave Filoni, the architect behind several acclaimed Star Wars television series, who must decide which previously announced films actually move forward. Kennedy’s tenure had a lot of exciting announcements that failed to materialize, leaving a slate of projects in various stages of development limbo.
Among those is a feature on Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker, first revealed at Star Wars Celebration in 2023. The project has cycled through multiple writers and, by most accounts, appears no closer to production.
Ridley remains the only confirmed cast member, though the expectation had long been that familiar faces from the sequel trilogy might appear alongside her. The 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker strongly hinted that Finn possessed Force sensitivity, making him a logical candidate to join Rey’s New Jedi Order.
Details about John Boyega’s alleged meeting remain sparse. It is unclear whether the discussions pertain to Ridley’s film, another theatrical project, or a television series. One possibility is Simon Kinberg’s planned post-Episode IX trilogy, a project Filoni is said to hold in high regard. That storyline could provide a natural entry point for an older, more experienced Finn (via SFFGazette).
Whether Boyega and Lucasfilm can move forward together remains to be seen. Filoni’s track record offers some reassurance that past creative missteps might be addressed, but no official announcement has been made. For now, the report stands as the strongest indication yet that Finn’s story may not be finished.
