Mandatory Music: The Weeknd Drops New Album ‘Dawn FM’ (And You’ll Never Guess Who Moonlights as His DJ)

The Weeknd just dropped a new album, Dawn FM, and it features a rag-tag bunch of collaborators, including Calvin Harris, Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Quincy Jones, Oneohtrix Point Never, Swedish House Mafia, Max Martin, and Josh Safdie.

But wait, there’s one more big name we haven’t dropped yet, and it’s one we never expected to see next to the title of DJ: Jim Carrey. Yes, the same Jim Carrey who has literally talked out of his ass for laughs.

On the album, which takes place in purgatory, Carrey voices a soft-rock radio host who guides you through Dawn FM and “into the light…until you’re fully engulfed,” The Weeknd explained during a recent virtual listening event.

“We’ll be there to hold your hand and guide you through this painless transition,” Carrey reassures listeners at the start of the track “Sacrifice.”

At the end of the album, the Ace Ventura star returns for “Phantom Regret By Jim,” a rhyme the actor wrote himself.

“God knows life is chaos, but he made one thing true / You’ve gotta unwind your mind, train your soul to align and dance ‘til you find that divine boogaloo,” he recites.

If the album’s concept sounds a little heavy, fret not; the tunes are still fully danceable and perfect for your next pandemic party.

We gotta give it up to The Weeknd – not only has he crafted another impressive collection of songs, he also has an uncanny ability to surprise us and keep us talking.
