Marvel’s Young Heroes Become ‘Champions’ This Fall

In the Marvel Universe, the kids are alright. But the one thing they’re not is Avengers!

Via Entertainment Weekly, Marvel has announced a new ongoing Champions series featuring former Avengers Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Nova, and Ms. Marvel alongside the young Cyclops from All-New X-Men, the new Totally Awesome Hulk (Amadeus Cho), and Viv Vision, a relatively new addition to the Marvel Universe.

Writer Mark Waid and artist Humberto Ramos will be the creative team of Champions, which is described as a more pro-active superhero team than some of the Avengers and other teams in the Marvel Universe. The first cover by Alex Ross depicts the core trio burning their Avengers IDs, which suggests that they’ll be quitting that team over the current fallout of Civil War II.

In the EW story, Waid noted that Champions will focus “on [a] smaller scale, more socially-active adventures,” as opposed to the traditional superhero stories that involve stopping supervillains from doing evil things. Whether the book will successfully be an activist superhero team remains to be seen.

Back in the ‘70s, Marvel had another team called the Champions that also featured a mashup of X-Men and Avengers characters, with Ghost Rider which appears to have nothing to do with the current incarnation of the team. But if the book is successful, it could give Marvel another franchise outside of the traditional Avengers or X-Men titles that dominate their output.

Champions will debut this fall during the next Marvel NOW! relaunch. Expect more relaunch news as we approach Comic-Con International in San Diego.
