Elon Musk is about to face renewed international attention over a controversial documentary about his life. Director Alex Gibney‘s film has already drawn criticism from the billionaire. Now, Universal Pictures has announced its overseas theatrical release schedule.

Universal announces international release dates for Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk documentary

Universal Pictures International has announced the international release schedule for Musk, Gibney’s documentary about the tech billionaire. The film runs for three hours and 45 minutes, with its international rollout set to begin in the United Kingdom on January 15, 2027.

The documentary will open in Germany on January 21, followed by Spain on February 5 and France on February 17. Australia will receive the film on February 25.

Universal has indicated that more international release dates will follow. The announcement comes after uncertainty over the film’s overseas distribution. Gibney previously confirmed that the studio had reconsidered its release plans.

Speaking to The New York Times, the filmmaker questioned whether political concerns influenced the decision. “Were they concerned that a film about the world’s richest man was problematic?” “Maybe, but you have to ask them,” he said.

The documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival before Bleecker Street released it in U.S. theaters in October. It also examines Musk’s relationships with several mothers of his 14 children.

Musk has strongly rejected the documentary’s portrayal of him, dismissing it as a “hit piece.” He also criticized Gibney, claiming the filmmaker “has ZERO integrity.”

Following screenings in Toronto and London, the film is expected to appear at festivals in Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Stockholm in November.

The documentary has received criticial acclaim despite the controversy. Variety described it as a “lacerating and important watch.” With Universal confirming its overseas release schedule, the film is set to reach audiences beyond North America.
