Jimmy Kimmel has floated a wild theory about Donald Trump after the midterms. The late-night host wondered whether the president might leave the White House earlier than expected.
However, Kimmel based his speculation on Trump’s decision to designate the Oval Office as a national monument, not on any announced plan to step down.
Jimmy Kimmel questions Trump’s Oval Office monument decision
Kimmel raised the theory during the November 5 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He focused on Trump’s decision to designate the Oval Office as a national monument.
“Why do this now? Why do this right after the midterms?” Kimmel asked. He then joked, “Maybe he’s planning to leave sooner than we think?”
According to TheWrap, the suggestion drew an audible reaction from the studio audience.
Still, Trump has not announced any plan to leave office early. The White House said the November 5 proclamation aims to preserve the Oval Office, Outer Oval Office, and Cabinet Room as historically significant spaces. The proclamation also allows presidents to redecorate and select furnishings.
Kimmel, meanwhile, used the timing to continue his post-election jokes about Trump. He mocked the president’s gold-heavy Oval Office decor and questioned why preserving the space had suddenly become a priority.
Kimmel’s latest remarks follow several days of election-focused monologues. After Democrats won control of Congress, he called on Trump to resign while mocking his reaction to the results.
He had also mocked Trump’s response to the election results in an earlier monologue.
Trump, for his part, has said he is not concerned about the possibility of impeachment following the Democratic victories. TheWrap noted that he made those comments while discussing the new balance of power in Congress.
For now, Kimmel’s early-exit suggestion remains exactly that: a late-night theory. Trump’s Oval Office proclamation does not say he plans to leave the White House before his term ends.
