King Charles finally addressed the humorous umbrella incident during his Caribbean tour. He was left standing without an umbrella during a rainstorm during his visit to Antigua. Charles made a lighthearted joke about the incident while addressing Commonwealth leaders alongside Queen Camilla.
King Charles references Antigua rainstorm involving Queen Camilla during Commonwealth speech
According to People, King Charles joked about his Caribbean experience. This was while he was addressing Commonwealth leaders at a dinner hosted by Queen Camilla. The 77-year-old had drawn public attention two days earlier when he was caught in a sudden downpour in Antigua.
Charles and Camilla attended an event marking Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th anniversary of independence. During the event, sudden rain interrupted the proceedings. While an aide quickly brought Camilla an umbrella, the King was left standing in the rain. King Charles appeared displeased as Camilla walked to a shelter. He gestured emphatically toward the aides, asking them to bring him an umbrella. He finally received one just as he stepped down from the podium to inspect the troops.
At the dinner, the King referenced the incident while reflecting on the diverse weather conditions across the 56 Commonwealth member countries. “It is one of the few organizations able to unite countries famous for snow, countries famous for deserts, and, most of all, countries whose citizens are utterly convinced they enjoy perfect weather all year round,” he said. “Although perhaps part of my role as Head of the Commonwealth is to provide an umbrella for you all…!” he added with a smile.
Earlier that day, the King addressed a more serious issue: Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. He expressed personal sorrow over the historical injustice. “The transatlantic trade in enslaved persons still casts a shadow over these islands and other Members of our Commonwealth,” Charles said. “As I have said before, that shameful chapter of history is one that fills my heart with horror and my soul with the most profound personal sorrow.”
Charles and Camilla’s Caribbean tour included visits to The Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda.
