Miranda Lambert Now Invokes Dolly Parton to Dodge Politics

Miranda Lambert thinks the world could use a little more of Dolly Parton’s wisdom. The Vice hitmaker believes more people could follow the late singer’s example of avoiding public political commentary while finding other ways to make their opinions known.

Miranda Lambert explains why Dolly Parton inspired her to keep politics offstage

During her conversation with The Independent, Lambert shared memories of meeting the legendary singer, who died on August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. The 42-year-old singer met Parton while working on a special musical collaboration. The two recorded a duet of Parton’s 1966 track Dumb Blonde for the 2018 film Dumplin’ soundtrack.

She said, “I walk in the studio, and there are cameras and lights and everything, and Dolly grabs my shoulders, says ‘nice to meet you,’ and gives me a hug.” “Then she turns me around and says, ‘Always find your good light first,'” Lambert added. She also admitted that she often relies on the late singer’s advice to keep things in perspective, especially when she’s in a bad mood or someone gets under her skin.

She explained that, much like Parton, she keeps her political opinions out of the public conversation while remaining outspoken in her support for the LGBT+ community. The country music singer–songwriter said, “I feel if we could be a little more like Dolly, and be good, be kind, be thoughtful.”

“You can have a stance on things without preaching it to people, and I also believe that my job as a musician, as a songwriter, is to be an escape. Songs are an escape; that’s a moment for us all to come together… and I just don’t ever think it’s my place to get up there and push my agendas of any other kinds,” she expressed, adding, “And I feel like Dolly did that well too.”
