Meri Brown admitted that stubbornness played a major role in why she stayed with Kody Brown even after she no longer believed their marriage could be repaired.
During the October 25 episode of Sister Wives, Meri reflected on the years she spent waiting for Kody to address the state of their relationship directly.
Meri Brown reveals why she refused to walk away from Kody
Meri told Christine Brown that she once hoped leaving their problems behind in Las Vegas would give her and Kody a fresh start.
“I felt like I had a lot of hope that OK, maybe this is a new beginning because he talked about that,” she said.
However, her hopes for reconciliation eventually faded. Meri said Kody would sometimes suggest they could start over, only to pull away again and stop communicating with her for long stretches.
According E! News, Meri had become convinced that their relationship was unlikely to recover. However, she also suspected Kody wanted her to be the person who officially ended things.
“I got a little bit stubborn and just stuck around,” she admitted.
Meri explained that she wanted Kody to tell her directly that their marriage was over. She said he had discussed his feelings elsewhere but avoided having that conversation with her.
“I wanted him to say it,” she told Christine.
The Sister Wives star also believed that leaving first would allow Kody to portray himself as the innocent party in their breakup.
“I was not going to let him be innocent in this situation,” Meri said.
However, their relationship had undergone significant changes years earlier. Meri legally divorced Kody in 2014 so he could marry Robyn Brown and adopt her children. Meri continued to hope that their spiritual marriage would improve, but they never reconciled.
Christine also recalled witnessing tension between Meri and Kody years before their eventual separation. She said their dynamic noticeably changed after the legal divorce.
Meri ultimately ended her relationship with Kody after Christine and Janelle Brown had separated from him.
Looking back, Meri explained that she stayed partly because she refused to let Kody avoid responsibility for their failed relationship.
