Adam Brody has opened up about a personal moment in his relationship with Leighton Meester. The actor reflected on how he asked the actress to marry him and admitted that he wishes he had made the proposal more special.
Brody also explained why he now thinks differently about marriage proposals.
Adam Brody reflects on his “very pedestrian” marriage proposal
During an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Brody discussed his 2013 proposal to Meester. The couple married a few months later.
Brody, now 46, described the proposal as “not as romantic as it should have been.” He chose not to reveal every detail but admitted that the moment lacked romance.
“The only thing romantic about it was the speed,” Brody explained.
He was referring to how early he proposed in their relationship and how quickly they married afterward. However, he described the proposal itself as “very pedestrian.”
Brody said he now wishes he had done more for Meester.
“I’ve learned, the thing is, at the time [of the proposal], you’re like, ‘Whatever,’ but you’re going to tell this story for the rest of your life,” he said.
He advised people to think about the story they may end up telling for years rather than focusing only on the moment itself.
“I do kick myself a little,” Brody admitted. “She deserved more.”
Podcast host Dax Shepard then asked whether Brody generally disliked grand gestures and pageantry. Brody agreed, saying, “Certainly.”
The actor also shared his thoughts on Valentine’s Day, describing the holiday as “state sanctioned love making.” He joked that the expectation for everyone to go out to dinner made the occasion feel strange.
Although Brody regrets how he proposed, his comments suggest that he now places more value on creating a memorable story around major relationship milestones.
