Justin Guarini Says Beating Kelly Clarkson on ‘American Idol’ Could’ve Caused a Riot

Justin Guarini has no regrets about finishing second to Kelly Clarkson on American Idol. Reflecting on the show’s first season, Guarini said he believed Clarkson deserved to win. He even joked that producers might need extra security if he won instead.

The singer reflected on that moment while discussing his new book, Center Stage Confidence: How to Own Your Story and Command Any Room. Guarini said his experience on the competition helped shape how he now thinks about confidence, fear and setbacks.

Guarini remembered standing backstage as Clarkson performed “A Moment Like This” shortly before the winner was announced. Her performance convinced him that the audience would not accept anyone else winning.

“You know you’re going to need to hire some extra security if I win this thing,” Guarini recalled telling an executive producer.

When the producer asked why, Guarini replied, “Because there’s going to be a riot if I win. Do you hear what she’s doing out there with this song?”

Despite wanting his own victory, Justin Guarini said he genuinely felt happy for Clarkson. He believed Clarkson deserved the American Idol Season 1 crown. Her successful career since the show only reinforced that belief.

“I knew that the right thing was for Kelly to take the crown,” he said. “And she’s since proven that that was the right thing.”

Still, finishing as the runner-up brought mixed emotions for Guarini. He admitted that part of him wanted to win and experience his own breakthrough moment. However, Guarini said he eventually found other opportunities to experience similar moments of success.

That perspective became part of the message behind his new book. Guarini said he wanted readers to view fear and failure as temporary experiences rather than permanent labels. He believes those experiences can help shape their future.

According to PEOPLE, the book also draws on Guarini’s experiences in entertainment and on Broadway. It includes insights from conversations with Michael Bublé, Jordan Fisher, and Amber Ruffin.

For Guarini, finishing second to Kelly Clarkson was about more than disappointment. Instead, he saw the result as one part of a much longer career.
