Glee Is Officially Returning — But There’s Already Controversy

Ryan Murphy’s musical drama “Glee” is set for a return more than a decade after its finale. While some fans appear enthusiastic, others are uncertain about maintaining the show’s legacy.

Ryan Murphy’s Glee revival is raising concerns about the show’s legacy

According to the Daily Mail, the official Instagram account for Murphy’s hit series confirmed the news with a graphic declaring, “It’s official. Glee is returning.” The reboot will stream on Disney+ and Hulu, although the storyline and returning cast members have not been confirmed.

Fans were quick to voice their concerns. One wrote, “this is lowkey scary. Pls don’t ruin our masterpiece [eyes wide open emoji].”

Another suggested a way to continue the story without undermining the original characters, saying, “Terrified. The only way I see this working is with the kids of the original glee club members all on their own journeys in their schools. Please don’t mess this up! [laughing emoji].”

A third fan referenced Naya Rivera’s character, Santana Lopez, writing, “whatever you do, do NOT even think about having santana die on the show.”

The concerns also bring the “Glee curse” into focus. Several original cast members have met with untimely deaths, cementing the moniker to the show. This includes the deaths of Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Rivera. Monteith died in 2013, Salling died in 2018, and Rivera drowned in 2020 while saving her young son.

However, Kevin McHale, who played Artie Abrams, has fought to not let these incidents evolve into conspiracy theories. In July, he wrote on X: “Let me log off today because the way too many of you talk about real people who have passed as a “sacrifice” or a “curse” in regards to a tv show is f*cking diabolical and untethered from any sort of humanity or reality,” adding, “get fed.”

Murphy had previously revealed that he had completed a script with co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. He also noted that he had contacted 10 original cast members. They had responded enthusiastically though they had not read the script yet.

The show originally aired for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. It won six Emmy Awards during that tenure.
