Menzel said, “So that’s what we did. We stood at the piano, and then the first time the cast heard us sing and everybody was really supportive and blown away. As my ex-husband Taye would say, because Maureen comes in the second half or at the end of the first half, there were weeks where I wasn’t called to rehearsal because they were just in a certain part.”
“And he was like, ‘Who is this girl? Where is she? What’s this Maureen part?’ And then when I finally sang, he’s like, ‘Okay, I want to marry her,'” she added. Before this revelation, the 55-year-old spoke about the special joy of originating roles. According to her, one of the most rewarding moments comes when you arrive at rehearsal, stand by the piano, and the composer introduces a new song that presents a new meaning to you.
