Andrew Garfield has yet to decide whether he wants to become a father. At the age of 43, the British-American actor best known for playing Spider-Man revealed on a podcast that the idea of becoming a dad “scares” him.
Andrew Garfield explains why the thought of becoming a father carries so much weight for him
During a chat about fatherhood on The Good Hang With Amy Poehler podcast, Garfield shared, “Being a dad scares the shit out of me. It scares me so much.” However, the host offered a different perspective, saying, “You’re gonna be so great.” To which the actor said, “I think that would be the biggest [and] most important thing I ever probably do.”
Garfield said he understood that reality and that thinking about it made him emotional. He added that he knew what it was like to be on the other end of it because he had been a child and understood what it meant to be a son. The Social Network star said he did want to become a father, but he sometimes felt selfish about wanting to be there. He admitted he was still unsure. However, he said he could not imagine a greater challenge than taking on that kind of responsibility.
Garfield, who has been in a relationship with actress Monica Barbaro since 2025, has spoken about the ups and downs of his relationship with his father, businessman Richard Garfield. In a 2014 interview with Time Out, “I don’t know of any father-and-son relationship that hasn’t struggled. Fathers do really have an ability to mess up their sons.” His mother was Lynn Garfield, whom he lost to pancreatic cancer in 2019.
Garfield’s next project is Artificial, a film based on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The story focuses on Altman’s controversial firing and rehiring in 2023. The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino and will arrive in theaters on December 25.
