Stephen Colbert’s Return to Late Night Came With a CBS Burn

Stephen Colbert returned to late-night television after The Late Show ended its CBS run. He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! following his recent Emmy wins. Colbert used the appearance to reflect on life after CBS. His comments included a pointed joke about the network.

Stephen Colbert jokes about life after The Late Show and not having to ‘think about the news every day’

Colbert joked that he no longer has to think about the news every day. He said he had “an opportunity to not think about the news every day, and I took it.” Kimmel then suggested Colbert seemed happier and healthier since leaving the show. Colbert responded with another joke about his former routine.

The comments came months after CBS ended The Late Show. The network announced the show’s cancellation earlier this year. CBS said the decision was “purely a financial decision” amid challenges facing late-night. The announcement ended Colbert’s 11-year run as host.

Colbert also addressed the network after The Late Show collected seven Emmy Awards. Kimmel asked whether CNS had called to congratulate him. Colbert replied, “I am not familiar with that organization.” The remark became another pointed reference to his former employer.

The exchange followed The Late Show’s final episode in May. Colbert closed the program after more than a decade behind the CBS desk. The finale also marked the end of the long-running Late Show franchise. CBS subsequently moved forward with plans for a new late-night lineup.

Colbert’s comments reflected the contrast between his old routine and current life. The host previously built much of his show around current events and political news. His latest appearance allowed him to joke about leaving that responsibility behind.

The CBS reference gave his late-night comeback an extra layer. Colbert acknowledged his former workplace without suggesting a return was underway. For now, his post-Late Show appearances have offered a different kind of television role. His latest jokes showed he remains willing to revisit his CBS chapter.
