Nicole Kidman says she felt ‘beyond lonely’ after winning her 2003 Oscar for The Hours
The 59-year-old actress won an Oscar in 2003 for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours. However, she recalled feeling extremely lonely that night.
According to People, Kidman felt the need for a partner after divorcing Tom Cruise in 2001. She opened up about the experience on Thursday’s episode of the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane.
“I was beyond lonely,” the actress said while promoting Practical Magic 2. “I had the pinnacle of my success, and I went home and was so lonely.”
She continued, “So, yeah, crazy, though, that sort of the confluence of events where you go, ‘I wish…’ I had my mom with me and my dad, but I was like, ‘Where’s my partner, someone that I can share this with?’” Kidman recalled. “It was one of the most profound moments where I went, ‘I’ve got to get a life’ and at the same time, I’m holding this gold statue where you go, ‘This is, this is it. This is the highest sort of prize you can get in our industry.’ And so grateful and yet so lonely.”
Kidman also confessed to feeling “weird” that night.
“I’d love to be able to just, you know, be wrapped in somebody’s arms right now,” she mused. “I’d love to be around now, something that feels really, ‘Oh, okay. This is my real life,’” she revealed.
Kidman and Cruise were married from 1990 to 2001. She later began a relationship with country singer Keith Urban, whom she married in 2006. They split in 2025 and finalized their divorce in January 2026 after nearly 20 years of marriage. The couple shares daughters Sunday Rose, 18, and Faith Margaret, 15.
