Actor Sebastian Stan refuses to go down the beaten path in his career. Despite global fame with the “Winter Soldier” franchise, the actor actively seeks out challenging roles that push him out of his comfort zone.
Sebastian Stan admits situations that provoke failure have a particular appeal
In an interview with Vulture, Stan reflected on his career evolution. He explained that he prefers playing the tough roles and not the conventional lead-man ones.
The 44-year-old admitted that boundary-pushing roles have a special appeal. “I’m drawn to a situation that provokes failure,” Stan said, explaining his criteria for choosing roles.
Stan said that he was tied to privileged or villainous characters during his early years. After being cast in the Marvel universe, he felt that his stereotyping had dried up challenging roles for him in Hollywood.
However, in recent times, Stan has taken control over his career and starred in character-driven roles. He earned special acclaim for starring in “A Different Man”, which won a Golden Globe for the role. Stan played Donald Trump in “The Apprentice”.
His latest project, “Fjord”, aligns with this bent of mind. The film follows a Romanian family in Norway, whose parenting techniques come under investigation after authorities suspect child abuse. Stan has a critical role in playing Mihai. The latter is portrayed as deeply religious and at the center of a cultural and legal conflict.
The role also had personal meaning for him, as he was born in Romania and later moved abroad. He spoke about how the role helped him reconnect with his roots.
Apart from work, Stan is celebrating other milestones in life. The actor confirmed that he and longtime partner Annabelle Wallis welcomed their first child earlier this year. He also revealed that juggling fatherhood and an intense acting career can be emotionally demanding.
Despite new responsibilities, Stan will keep chasing challenging roles. He said that uncertainty and risk are part of the unique experience of acting.
