Theo James, the British actor who plays Eddie, the Duke of Halstead, in Netflix’s The Gentlemen, has weighed in on the growing buzz around Meghan Markle possibly joining the show. However, his playful response suggests fans may want to hold off on treating the casting rumors as a done deal.
Theo James dismissed the buzz around Meghan Markle’s rumored role
When Town & Country asked James about reports that a “certain ex-royal” could appear in the crime drama’s third season, the 41-year-old actor had some fun with the question.
“Yes, Fergie is joining. She’ll be playing my love interest,” James joked, referring to Sarah Ferguson by her nickname.
He then appeared to downplay the Meghan speculation, saying, “I think that was mainly a lot of hot air.”
James explained that the team is currently focused on getting viewers interested in season 2. Plans for season 3 are still taking shape. Although the creators have bigger ideas for expanding the show and exploring different countries, he said the smaller details remain unsettled.
“But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it’s still very much up in the air,” he added. The comments come after PEOPLE reported that Meghan, 45, was in talks for a role in season 3. However, no deal had been finalized. Netflix U.K. scripted chief Manda Levin also kept the possibility open. She was asked about the reports at the Edinburgh TV Festival and replied, “All bets are off.”
A potential role would mark a major return to acting for Meghan. She left Suits ahead of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. In a 2022 Variety interview, she said, “I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not,” when asked about acting again.
For now, Meghan’s reported casting remains uncertain. While the rumors have sparked plenty of attention, James’ comments and the lack of a confirmed deal suggest fans will have to wait for more clarity about whether she will actually appear in the show’s third season.
