Tupac Trial Opens With Prosecutors Calling His Killing ‘Revenge’

Tupac Shakur‘s murder trial begins decades after his death. Prosecutors called the killing a “revenge” in their statements. The prosecutors’ case is expected to rely on Davis’ past statements about the shooting and what happened that night.

Duane Keith Davis is on trial in the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, with prosecutors alleging the killing was “an act of revenge”

The trial of Duane Keith Davis in the 1996 murder of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur has begun nearly three decades after the rapper’s death. In opening statements, prosecutors called his death an “act of revenge,” saying that Davis showed “visceral anger” for years.

According to CNN, prosecutors alleged that the shooting was an act of retaliation for an earlier confrontation at MGM Grand. Tupac and members of his entourage were involved in a clash with Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson. According to prosecutors, the incident added fuel to Davis’ anger that allegedly led to the rapper’s killing.

Tupac Shakur was riding in a car with Death Row Records CEO Marion Suge Knight when a white Cadillac pulled up beside them.  Reportedly, the “two or three males inside” the car opened fire at Tupac.

While prosecutors called the killing an act of revenge, defense attorney Michael Sanft called the investigation “biased, sloppy, and incomplete” and argued that the prosecutors do not have enough evidence.

Suge Knight, who was in the car with the rapper, could also become an important figure in the trial. However, Knight has reportedly refused to testify in court, adding another complication in the case.

Duane Keith Davis faces a murder trial after his past statements and 2019 memoir became key evidence. Prosecutors pointed to his description of the shooting while defense lawyers argued that the memoir was exaggerated for profit.

While the trial has begun, Davis pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
