Gillian Anderson Calls The Salt Path Fallout with Sony a ‘Betrayal’

Gillian Anderson says she felt “betrayed” after The Salt Path scandal. The actress, who starred as Raynor Winn opposite Jason Isaacs in the film adaptation of the controversial memoir, said Sony dropped its deal to distribute the film.

Gillian Anderson recalls the disappointment of losing Sony distribution after questions were raised about The Salt Path memoir

The Salt Path is adapted from Ray and Moth Winn’s memoir. The story follows the couple as they lose their home and walk along England’s south coast following Moth’s terminal illness diagnosis. The memoir became a publishing sensation, selling two million copies before the film hit UK cinemas in May 2025.

The controversy began with a report from the UK’s Observer. The report alleged that parts of the Winns’ story had been misrepresented. It raised questions about claims involving embezzled money and the loss of their home. It also suggested that Moth did not suffer from corticobasal degeneration (CBD).

Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 58-year-old actress said she found the situation “really disappointing” and called it “a huge letdown.” “The story came out the week we were signing U.S. distribution, and Sony withdrew. We had been so surprised by its success: ‘What, really, this film about two old people going on a walk?’ It felt like such a betrayal because we’d spent time with [the Winns],” she explained.

Anderson revealed that she has not been in contact with the couple, saying, “It must have been really unsettling, to be potentially, allegedly, not telling the truth on live TV.” She added, “I was interested in the due diligence — like, how has it come to this? What degree of proof was there? They had told us that they couldn’t talk about [a previous] legal case because it was ongoing. Anyway. It was unfortunate.”

Despite Sony’s withdrawal, the film, directed by Marianne Elliott, is still set for a North American release. It is set to hit theaters in the United States and Canada later this month through Rialto Distribution International.
