Former NFL player Tony Romo’s future with CBS Sports remains uncertain after his July arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The network has now addressed his status, but executives have yet to make a final decision on whether the longtime NFL analyst will return to the broadcast booth.

The former Dallas Cowboys star faced an arrest in July on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, creating uncertainty around his CBS Sports return.
According to Entertainment Weekly, division president David Berson has now addressed the situation. Berson said, “There’s no timetable or final decision at this time. It’s an evolving situation, and therefore we’re still assessing.”
“Since it continues to evolve and we’re on the eve of the season, I felt it’s very important that our team… have certainty and direction so we can definitively plan and focus on the production and marketing as we kick off the season. In making this decision, we have to consider the impact on our image and on our brand. That’s very important to us,” he added.
Romo’s broadcasting career began shortly after his NFL retirement. The four-time Pro Bowler announced his retirement from the NFL in April 2017, and CBS Sports hired him that same month as its lead NFL analyst.
In 2020, the former quarterback also signed a 10-year, $180 million extension with CBS Sports. Romo quickly became a fan favorite for his energetic commentary and ability to predict plays during broadcasts.
The arrest has now created uncertainty around the analyst’s place on CBS Sports’ NFL broadcasts.
While Tony Romo’s situation remains uncertain, CBS Sports has reportedly placed him on indefinite leave as the network evaluates the situation. For now, J.J. Watt is reportedly among the leading candidates to join Jim Nantz in the broadcast booth.
