Britney Spears reportedly turned one of her most heartbreaking moments into one of her most unforgettable performances. A longtime collaborator recalled the emotional day she received Justin Timberlake’s breakup text while filming one of her biggest music videos.
The painful moment unfolded during an exhausting overnight shoot in 2002. Instead of ending production, Britney reportedly transformed her heartbreak into the video’s defining scene.
Chris Applebaum recalls the moment Britney Spears received Justin Timberlake’s breakup text while filming the ‘Overprotected’ music video
Music video director Chris Applebaum revisited the experience during an appearance on the Hyperfixated with Joseph Shepherd podcast. He remembered filming the Darkchild remix video for Overprotected when Britney suddenly disappeared near the end of a 20-hour shoot.
Applebaum said the crew repeatedly knocked on her trailer without success. Concerned about finishing the final rain sequence, he decided to check on her himself.
Before reaching the trailer, choreographer Brian Friedman reportedly warned him away, calling it “a bad situation.” Applebaum entered anyway after Britney’s assistant invited him inside.
He recalled finding an unusually quiet room before Britney revealed what had happened.
“She shows me her flip phone screen,” Applebaum said during the interview. “I saw that her boyfriend had written to her to end the relationship.”
Applebaum said he completely understood if Britney wanted to stop filming. However, as he turned to leave, he noticed her eating animal crackers and suddenly offered different advice.
“You could get back out there and do a performance that’s so hot that you show him he just messed up the best thing he’s ever had,” he remembered telling her.
According to Applebaum, the suggestion instantly changed Britney’s mood.
“She just like ‘light bulb’ and was like, ‘That’s it! You’re right! Let’s do that,’” he recalled. “She came out and that’s why that performance was so cool.”
He later showed the finished sequence to Friedman, who reportedly became emotional and praised the final result. Applebaum said the choreographer believed the performance finally did his routine justice.
Britney later confirmed the breakup story herself in her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me.” She wrote that Justin Timberlake ended their three-year relationship with a brief text message reading, “It’s over.”
Looking back, Applebaum’s story painted a remarkable picture of resilience. What could have ended the shoot instead became one of Britney’s most memorable music video performances.
