A quarterback’s off-the-cuff jab at a former health official set off a chain of responses within 24 hours, pulling in a lawyer, a head coach and a team spokesperson. One of them kept it short and blunt.

Aaron Rodgers drew a swift response after calling former top U.S. health official Dr. Anthony Fauci an “absolute coward” on The Pat McAfee Show. In fact, within a day, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, the Steelers organization and Fauci’s attorney all weighed in.
David Schertler, who represents Fauci, kept his reply short in an email to The Athletic. “Aaron Rodgers doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He should stick to football,” he wrote.
However, McCarthy took a different route when reporters raised the comments. “My job is to keep it about football,” he said.
Later that day, he expanded on the point. “These are grown men. They all have different opinions. There’s no question about that,” McCarthy said. “But at the end of the day, my job is to keep it about football, keep the focus on winning. That’s why we’re here. We’re in a good spot.”
In addition, Steelers spokesperson Burt Lauten gave The Athletic a statement. “Discussions around culture and politics can bring differing perspectives, and our players are entitled to their own personal views. With respect to that, I am certain there are a variety of opinions on many topics within our locker room,” he said.
As for the interview itself, Aaron Rodgers spent nearly 30 minutes on The Pat McAfee Show. Notably, ESPN broadcast only the first seven minutes, while a digital platform carried the rest. To begin, McAfee asked about his mindset heading into the season.
“I’m going to plead the fifth,” Rodgers said with a smile. “Like that absolute coward, Tony Fauci. Absolute coward.”
Specifically, the remark pointed to Anthony Fauci invoking the Fifth Amendment on every question during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee hearing last week.
Previously, Fauci directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, and he led the federal COVID-19 response.
Meanwhile, Rodgers kept going. “Are you kidding me?” he continued. “You got a pardon and you pleaded over 100 times at the White House? What are you scared of, Tony? I thought you were the science. I thought, ‘I am science,’ and you get up there and you can’t answer a question? What are we doing?”
Ultimately, Rodgers returned to Fauci and the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols throughout the rest of the interview.
