John Cena Spent More Than 20 Hours on This Cosmetic Procedure

John Cena got candid about the story behind his shaved head. It involved a hair transplant, two surgeries, and more than 20 hours in the chair.

The WWE legend, 49, first went under the knife in November 2024, then returned for a second round about 15 months later, this time going all in for the best possible results.

John Cena reveals that two hair transplant surgeries boosted his confidence

Speaking with PEOPLE at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25, Cena said his fresh shaved look was going “great” in the wake of his second procedure. He gave full credit to his doctor, Ken Anderson, who runs the Anderson Center for Hair in Georgia.

“The objective is to get more hair, and this was the best way to do it, talking with Ken Anderson, my doctor over there,” he said. “I love the guy. He’s totally changed my life.”

The first round pleased him so much that he came back for a touch-up. “I went back to him like, ‘Man, you did great. I have this one small, small, small spot. Can you do it?” Cena recalled. “He’s like, ‘I can. My best results are – if you’re bold enough to shave your head, I can keep the follicles.’ “

The two operations were a serious commitment. “My first operation was 13 and a half hours. The second one was eight hours,” the Peacemaker star said, calling Anderson “a master.” A shaved head, he explained, lets the doctor plant follicles more quickly during surgery.

Cena has been open about his journey before, sharing that his WWE fans were the ones who nudged him to take his hair health seriously. “As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light,” he said, pointing to crowd signs that read “The bald John Cena.” His routine now includes red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, and the hair transplant itself.

His only regret is not starting sooner. “I hate the fact that if there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago,” he explained. He noted that seven or eight out of 10 men deal with thinning or baldness, and he hopes talking about it openly helps chip away at the stigma.
