The comedian has reported that she feels freer and less concerned about what others think. O’Donnell also shared how her family and new experiences have shaped her perspective. She is returning to New York with a new one-woman show this summer.

During an interview with PEOPLE, O’Donnell discussed her yearlong feud with Trump and its impact on her life. “If you had written this as a movie, a stand-up comic makes fun of a reality show host who is a bloviating idiot and he ends up being the president, and then he doesn’t shut up about her for 20 years, it would be unbelievable,” she said. Rosie added that living through it has been “very trippy.” She said she now sees the experience with more distance and understanding.
O’Donnell said moving away from the constant stream of U.S. political news has helped her find greater peace, allowing her to view her years-long conflict with Trump from a different perspective. Beyond politics, O’Donnell said her youngest child, Clay, who is non-binary and autistic, has also shifted her outlook on life. “Clay’s vulnerability has forced me to be more connected,” she said.
In January 2025, O’Donnell moved to Ireland and said the experience helped her reconnect with herself. She returned to New York to star in her one-woman show, “Common Knowledge,” which opened on July 22 at the Daryl Roth Theatre. The show delves into her childhood in Commack, Long Island, where she lost her mother at age 10 and raised her five children.
O’Donnell will also be a guest host for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” starting Aug. 17. She said she admires Jimmy Kimmel and wants to support his work as a political commentator.
