The Chicks brought their political message straight to the stage. During an Election Night show in Los Angeles, the trio raised signs aimed at President Donald Trump. The moment came weeks after the White House attacked lead singer Natalie Maines over her criticism of Trump.
Natalie Maines and The Chicks display anti-Trump signs at their Los Angeles concert
Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer performed at the Dolby Theatre, where they held up red fans bearing the message “F— Trump.” The crowd responded with cheers and applause as the band displayed the signs. Maines has never been shy about sharing her political views, and the concert gave her another chance to make that clear (via The Daily Beast).
She also welcomed the audience with a nod to the night’s political results. “Hello, Los Angeles! Welcome to our blunami night. So glad we could enjoy this night together,” she said. She later celebrated Democratic victories in her home state and across Congress. “Texas is blue, the Senate is blue, the House is blue,” Maines said, adding that the evening would have felt “very different” otherwise.
The performance followed a clash that began during the group’s Taking the Long Way anniversary tour. At a New York concert, Maines revisited her past criticism of former President George W. Bush over the Iraq war. She joked that she would now give the former president a “big wet kiss,” before saying, “Because now we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from the United States.”
The White House responded with a personal attack. A spokesperson told Fox News that Maines was “a despicable nobody” who suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” then added an insult about her intelligence, calling her brain “peanut-sized.”
The Chicks have criticized Trump since his first presidency. They also backed Texas Democrat James Talarico ahead of the midterms. Talarico went on to defeat Republican Ken Paxton, becoming the first Democrat to win the Senate seat in more than 30 years.
