George Lucas’s comments on artificial intelligence have reignited the debate over AI’s role in filmmaking. The filmmaker called AI the future of filmmaking, arguing that technological change is inevitable.
George Lucas says AI makes filming movies “easy”
The legendary Star Wars filmmaker, George Lucas, spoke about embracing technology in filmmaking. In an interview with A Rabbit’s Foot, he shared his views on AI, adding to the ongoing debate.
He said, “Artificial intelligence means it’s much easier for us to make movies. It’s very much like sitting here saying, ‘Well, I believe the horse and the buggy are really where it’s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there are all kinds of problems with them, and pretty soon they’ll be making them into tanks, and then they’ll be killing people. It’s terrible.” Lucas argued that resisting AI is similar to earlier technological advances that eventually transformed industries.
He said there was nothing to do about it because it is the future. The filmmaker stepped away from Lucasfilm after selling the company to Disney. His comments come as Hollywood remains divided over the use of AI.
According to Radar, an insider said, “George has always embraced technological innovation, but these comments have shocked many filmmakers who believe AI should remain a tool rather than become the driving force behind creative storytelling. His remarks have reignited concerns about where the industry is heading.”
Earlier this month, five-time Grammy winner “Weird Al” Yankovic rejected a lucrative paycheck for an AI advertisement, calling it “the opposite of making art.”
The debate over AI in filmmaking has continued to divide the entertainment industry. The issue remains a major topic of discussion in Hollywood, with many artists opposing the use of AI while others view it as a valuable filmmaking tool.
