The Rolling Stones have some opinions on artificial intelligence and its impact on music. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards discussed AI after using deepfake technology for their “In the Stars” music video. The video featured younger versions of the band members using AI-generated faces. According to the rock legends, they encourage creativity, but do not want AI to replace original ideas.
Mick Jagger said creative musicians should make original music instead of using AI to imitate other artists.
In a new Billboard cover story, Jagger and Richards explained their experience using AI for the “In the Stars” video from the band’s new album, Foreign Tongues. Jagger said the team had fun with the process. He said that the technology was only used to change the faces of the musicians when they were playing together. The video featured some performers who resembled The Rolling Stones from 1968.
Richards described the project as “our brushing with AI” and shared his thoughts about the technology. “I said, ‘Very nice. I wish I looked like that now,’” Richards said while discussing the younger appearance. He added that AI may have a place in music videos. Richards also mentioned that creators should utilize the technology appropriately.
Richards prefers original music over AI-generated copies. “We want new input. We don’t want more and more copying and synthesizing,” he told Billboard. The guitarist stated that artists need to bring new ideas and creativity to music. He also questioned the benefit in trying to duplicate existing styles using AI.
Jagger said using AI to create songs in another artist’s style does not represent true creativity. He explained that creative people should bring their own ideas to music. Foreign Tongues was released by The Rolling Stones on Friday, July 10. The band remains dedicated to their original music and exploring the evolution of technology in the music industry.
