Tennis Icon Chris Evert Will Miss Wimbledon After New Cancer Diagnosis

Former tennis champion Chris Evert has revealed that her ovarian cancer has returned for a third time, forcing her to step away from this year’s Wimbledon coverage while she undergoes treatment.

The 70-year-old shared the news in a statement, saying she would miss the tournament as she focuses on her health and begins another round of medical care.

Evert was first diagnosed with Stage 1C ovarian cancer in 2021 after undergoing a preventive hysterectomy following the death of her younger sister, Jeanne Evert Dubin, from the same disease.

After completing chemotherapy, Evert announced in 2022 that there was no evidence of disease. However, the cancer returned in 2023, and a recent Instagram post has now revealed that she is battling a third recurrence.

Evert says, “Ovarian cancer is relentless, but I will stay optimistic and determined in continuing to fight this battle,” adding, “I am deeply grateful to my medical team, my family, friends and everyone who has reached out with kindness and encouragement. I look forward to seeing everyone again soon,” as reported by People.

The three-time Wimbledon champion received a heartfelt reply from fellow Wimbledon alum Martina Navratilova, who commented, “My friend Chrissie is a champion of champions and as such she will slay this monster again. We are all pulling for you, and know you will come out on the other side cancer-free again- lots of love, m.”

Evert has remained remarkably open about every stage of her cancer journey, using her platform to encourage awareness and emphasize the importance of early detection. Even as she faces the disease for a third time, the tennis legend has made it clear that she is determined to continue the fight.
