The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death, but the cause of death has yet to be determined. The death of the biographer, who co-authored Finding the Champion Within with Caitlyn Jenner for Simon & Schuster, comes just two weeks after a man in his 40s reportedly died from cardiac arrest on the same trail, according to Variety. Hasley was also found near Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles after suffering an apparent medical emergency while hiking.
An LAFD spokesperson said Air Operations crews were lowered to the patient’s location and administered medical assistance, according to the New York Post. A neighbor who lived near Hasley’s home, close to Runyon Canyon, said they were saddened by the news of his death. “I just saw him on Saturday carrying groceries. It’s very sad that he died alone like that,” the neighbor told the outlet.
Hasley, who had an impressive career as both an author and screenwriter, was briefly married to Alligator star Robin Riker in 1987. According to his IMDb profile, he was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1948. He also contributed 37 episodes to The Smurfs during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Variety also states that he developed the pilot Borderline Heroes, wrote the half-hour comedy pilot Steeltown for Castle Rock Entertainment, and created Brooklyn District. Hasley later worked with Oliver Stone and Gerald Green on Defiance and also wrote episodes of The Young Riders and Swift Justice. In addition, he served as an instructor in screenwriting at UCLA Extension.
