Second Hospital Visit for Denmark Royal in Two Weeks

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe is back in hospital for the second time after developing a blood clot. She was admitted to Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet and is expected to remain there for several days.

The Royal Correspondent announced the news via a statement that read, “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been admitted to Rigshospitalet following the discovery of a larger blood accumulation in the hip region resulting from a fall on September 18th, 2024, at Fredensborg Slot.”

It added, “the condition was identified during the course of a CT scan, after which the Queen received treatment at the hospital. ” It stated that she is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. The palace said she was “doing well under the circumstances.”

The latest hospitalization comes less than a week after Queen Margrethe, 86, was discharged from a six-day hospital stay. The statement stated, “On May 14th, 2026, Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet after suffering a heart attack.” It also confirmed that she had undergone a balloon angioplasty procedure involving one of the coronary arteries of the heart.

She made a surprise announcement on New Year’s Eve 2023 that she would abdicate. This made her the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate.

Health concerns were among the reasons she gave for abdicating.

Announcing her decision, she shared back then, as reported by TOWN&COUNTRY, “In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future–whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time.”

In January 2024, her son, King Frederik, was officially crowned.
