New York Comic Con 2014: DC Announces Wonder Woman ‘77, Mortal Kombat X & Fables: The Wolf Among Us

Of the major comic book publishers, DC Comics has perhaps been the most aggressive with its digital first comic line including the wildly popular Injustice: Gods Among Us and Batman ‘66.

At New York Comic Con, DC revealed plans to add three more titles to its digital slate of comic books. First up is Wonder Woman ‘77, which will be based on the “Wonder Woman” TV series that starred Lynda Carter in the title role. Marc Andreyko will write Wonder Woman ‘77 with former Wonder Woman artist, Nicola Scott on covers.

The official art team for Wonder Woman ‘77 will be announced later, but the series will have a staggered release schedule. The first of six digital chapters of Wonder Woman ‘77 will debut in December before being collected as two printed comic book issues in early 2015. Then Wonder Woman ‘77 will go on hiatus before returning in Spring 2015.

This project clearly seems to be following in the footsteps of Batman ‘66, and it makes me wonder if Superman ‘55 is the next logical step.

DC’s other new digital comics are centered on two video game adaptations. The first is Fables: The Wolf Among Us, based on Telltale Games adaptation of Bill Willingham’s Fables Vertigo comic book series. This is Vertigo’s first digital first limited series. Matthew Sturges and Dave Justus are the writing team on Fables: The Wolf Among Us, with art by Steve Sadowski, Travis Moore, and Shawn McManus. Chrissie Zullo will provide the covers of Fables: The Wolf Among Us and it will premiere in December online before being collected in print in 2015.

The third new digital title is based on NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming Mortal Kombat X video game. Writer Shawn Kittelsen and artist Dexter Soy will chronicle the prequel Mortal Kombat X comic that explores what happened before the newest game in the series which is set 25 years after the previous Mortal Kombat game.

Given the presence of Scorpion and Sub Zero on these Mortal Kombat X covers by Ivan Reis, it is a safe bet that they will play a significant part in the new comic book series. However, the prequel Mortal Kombat X comic will reportedly feature the next generation of fighters in addition to the old favorites.

The Mortal Kombat X digital comic will premiere in January 2015.
