Prince William and Prince George broke a royal rule on their way to watch a soccer match in Barcelona, Spain. They flew commercially together, which is seemingly not allowed within the royal family. This update comes a few days after William became the first working royal to appear on The Graham Norton Show. He shared the couch with Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, and Robert Irwin.
Why two direct heirs to the throne traditionally avoid flying together
According to a recent video posted on X, Prince William and his son, George, flew to Spain to watch the match between Aston Villa and Barcelona. However, they were spotted together on a commercial plane to reach their destination, which breaks the traditional royal protocol. Per PEOPLE, “The direct heirs to the throne do not travel together, in an effort to secure the future of the monarchy in the event of a tragic accident.”
In a 2023 conversation with A Right Royal Podcast, King Charles’s former pilot, Graham Laurie, revealed that the heirs’ separate travel has been a thing since William was young. He explained, “Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince [Charles], the Princess [Diana], Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old… After that, he had to have a separate aircraft, and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty.”
During his appearance on the British talk show, William spoke about a wide range of topics. This included the two career paths he had considered pursuing and his passion for Christopher Nolan movies and Aston Villa football. He talked about tackling climate change as well.
This trip also comes amid Charles’ 9-day Caribbean tour. The King stopped by the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda. Queen Camilla joined him on the last leg of the tour.
