Luigi Mangione is still widely known for allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Now, his name is trending once again, but this time, he hasn’t done anything himself. His cousin, Nino Mangione, has recently pulled off a narrow election victory in Maryland.
Nino Mangione, Luigi Mangione’s cousin, wins Baltimore County Council District 5 race
The Republican won a seat on the Baltimore County Council by a narrow margin, representing District 5. This makes it important to understand what his campaign focused on. According to TMZ’s coverage, Nino Mangione centered his campaign on addressing rising crime in Baltimore County.
In reading, “Violent crime is increasing in Baltimore County. Every day we read or hear about another random act of violence against our citizens. Murders, shootings, carjackings, and robberies are all at record levels and are increasing every day.”
A member of the Baltimore County Council secured 49% of the vote, compared to 45% for his opponent, Democrat Sean McIntosh. Ironically, violent crime was one of the first issues highlighted on Nino’s campaign website.
Luigi Mangione’s cousin previously served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2019 to 2026. Until just before the November 4, 2026, election, he had spent five months serving on the Baltimore County Council. Republicans appointed him in June 2026 to fill a vacant seat.
Nino’s victory came just days after his cousin Luigi’s legal team asked a New York state court to dismiss the case against him on double jeopardy grounds. This legal principle protects defendants from being tried twice for the same offense.
For context, Luigi Mangione faces two separate cases at different levels in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Both cases have been ongoing since his arrest on December 9, 2024.
As for the latest developments, State Court Judge Gregory Carro has temporarily postponed the state trial. Oral arguments on the double jeopardy motion are now scheduled for December 10, 2026.
