Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty, Admits 3-D Printing Gun

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in his federal case tied to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The plea marks a significant turn after Mangione had maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

The plea was entered on Friday in federal court in Manhattan.

Luigi Mangione admitted shooting Brian Thompson, saying he knew the attack was illegal

According to CBS News, Mangione admitted that he traveled to New York with the intention of carrying out the shooting. During the hearing, he spoke about years of back pain and his struggles navigating the health insurance system.

Mangione also admitted making the weapon, saying, “I used a 3D printer to make parts of the gun, and traveled to New York with the gun, silencer, and magazine with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson.”

He also acknowledged that he knew the shooting was illegal. He said he was aware that it would place Thompson in fear of death or serious bodily injury. Mangione replied, “Guilty,” when asked how he pleaded. The judge accepted the plea and informed Mangione that the maximum sentence was life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18, 2026.

Federal prosecutors outlined the evidence against him. This included surveillance video of the shooting, footage of his escape on a bicycle, DNA evidence, and shell casings. Additionally, items recovered after his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, were also brought into consideration.

Although the federal plea ends the planned federal trial, Mangione still faces a separate New York state trial. In that case, he is charged with second-degree murder and other offenses. The outcome of those proceedings could determine whether prosecutors seek an additional life sentence beyond the federal conviction.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed on Dec. 4, 2024, outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel as he arrived for UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference.
