What happens in The Liberation trailer?
The Liberation trailer opens with Carrie Coon’s Rita, a housewife, who is narrating her weird dream situation. “I’m in a hallway, and I’m walking towards a door.” The next scene shows her having a conversation with her husband, who asks, “Where were you?” She replies, “I lost track of time. I met this woman, a client.”
The next scene introduces Lily James‘ Ricki, a young spiritual leader. She tells Rita, “You carry a lot of weight around, don’t you?” Rita responds, “Slow metabolism.” Ricki argues, “No, come on. You’re beautiful. I meant inside.” The trailer jumps back to Rita’s dream sequence where she sees a “girl standing in the cold.”
Set in 1983, the movie then shows how Rita gets deeply involved with Ricki and her all-female gatherings. She starts getting detached from her family. Ricki’s voiceover is heard, saying, “I choose to believe in myself.” Rita repeats, “I choose to believe in myself.” She then repeats another one of Ricki’s spiritual mantras. “I can handle whatever comes my way.”
But Rita soon faces a tough choice between her own freedom and her family when her daughters also get influenced by Ricki’s group. Rita is shown siding with Ricki while separating from her family. Her husband tells her daughters, “That’s not your mother. It’s like she’s possessed.” The trailer ends by teasing Rita going down a dark path. “I am ready for my liberation.”
The ensemble cast of the psychological thriller also features Bella Ramsey, Odessa Young, and Tracy Letts. Bleecker Street’s The Liberation releases in select theaters on January 8, 2027, before its nationwide debut on January 15, 2027.
