Curry Barker’s breakout horror film Obsession is switching streaming platforms, with Netflix as its next stop. The move puts Inde Navarrette’s lead performance in front of a new audience just as the awards race picks up speed.
Inde Navarrette’s Obsession makes its Netflix debut this November after leaving Peacock
Netflix will begin streaming Obsession on November 17, ending the film’s run on Peacock. A library shuffle like this rarely draws attention, but the timing gives it weight. Awards voters are starting to build their ballots, and the film is already part of that discussion (via What’s On Netflix).
Focus Features, the film’s distributor, reportedly wants Navarrette nominated for Best Actress and Barker for Best Original Screenplay. The studio is also campaigning in 14 other categories. Among them are Best Picture, Best Director for Barker, and Best Actor for co-star Michael Johnston. Megan Lawless is in the running for Best Supporting Actress, while Cooper Tomlinson and Andy Richter are pushed for Best Supporting Actor.
Netflix offers a huge platform for that push. The service ended 2025 with 325 million subscribers and remains a dominant force. Wider availability should help keep the film in front of voters ahead of the Oscars. It could also help with critics’ groups such as the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, and with guild honors for actors, directors, writers, and producers. After all, the director is planning on releasing an extended version of Obsession as well.
Barker’s film cost only $750,000 to make. It debuted at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where buyers fought over it for 24 hours. Focus Features won, paying roughly $15 million for worldwide rights. The studio opened Obsession in theaters on May 15, and it took in $17.1 million its first weekend. Most films fade after that. This one did the opposite, earning more in each of its next four weekends than it did on opening weekend.
By the time the R-rated thriller left theaters in August, it had grossed $263.4 million in the United States and Canada and nearly $257.8 million overseas. Its worldwide total reached $521.2 million. Navarrette and Johnston star in the film, and Barker wrote and directed it. Each now has a new streaming audience and a campaign backing them as nomination season approaches.
