Frozen 3 & 4 Update Reveals Why Disney’s Plans for Sequel Movies Have Changed

Disney is adjusting its release strategy for Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 to give both animated sequels additional room for creative development. The studio initially planned to release both sequels within a short period. However, it has since shifted its approach to give each movie a distinct and fulfilling story.

Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush discussed the sequels’ creative direction.

When asked about Frozen 4’s influence on the third movie’s story, he admitted, “It’s tricky to answer that question.” He further explained that the team needs to understand where the characters are heading emotionally. Bush added, “The plot behind that, at least for me, is secondary to the character journey.”

Bush also revealed that the initial plan was to release the movies in quick succession. He said, “Looking at Frozen 3 and what a Frozen 4 could look like, I know early on it was, ‘We’re going to put them right together, and they’re going to be out in the world. It’s going to happen quick.’ That’s not what we’re doing, for a lot of reasons.”

Disney wants Frozen 4 to build on the franchise without repeating its past

Bush emphasized that the third film should deliver a complete story instead of just setting up its sequel. He said, “We want to make sure that Frozen 3 is the best movie it can possibly be, so that when you get to the end of the movie, do you feel like you’ve watched a complete story?”

The executive also emphasized the importance of leaving room for future possibilities. While planning the franchise’s next chapter, the filmmakers don’t want potential ideas for a fourth film to restrict the creative direction of the third. He explained, “If you’re so rigid on what [Frozen] 4 might look like, then it could stifle you.”

Music is another major part of this challenge. Bush pointed out that the upcoming soundtracks must maintain the franchise’s identity while introducing something fresh. He added, “You want those songs to feel different, that you’re not repeating yourself, but also don’t feel like it’s music from a different type of movie.”

Directed by Jennifer Lee, Frozen 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on November 24, 2027. Disney has not yet revealed a release date for Frozen 4.
