Popular Anne Hathaway Franchise’s Next Sequel Finally Gets a Positive Update as Fans Want More

A popular franchise featuring Anne Hathaway has received an intriguing update from its director. Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Saldanha, who directed the first two Rio movies, recently discussed he possibility of a third installment.

In an interview with CinemaPop, Saldanha was asked whether Rio 3 is a possibility. “It’s always a possibility, but you never know, right?” Saldanha said (translated from Portuguese). “That’s just part of the process—I mean, I was involved with Amir [Tarin] for eight years, and the production company was involved for even longer. So, yeah, it takes some time.”

When asked whether making a third film was also a personal desire of his, Saldanha responded positively. “It’s a desire too, of course,” the 61-year-old said.

The latest Rio 3 comments leave the door open for another adventure

Saldanha also discussed a potential sequel to Ferdinand, but his outlook was less encouraging. “This one is more difficult, I think. It’s because it’s a unique story, right? A limited story. It was the only story we had to tell,” he explained.

In contrast, the filmmaker suggested that the Rio franchise has more stories to explore. He added a brief but encouraging statement: “Rio can continue.” While there is no official announcement, the comments do not rule out the possibility of another installment in the animated adventure franchise.

The possibility of a third film has been discussed for several years. Saldanha told Cinemablend that he was already thinking about a third installment. “I have a lot of stories to tell, so we’re [starting to] prepare for it,” he said. The 61-year-old added that he wanted to take the characters “to a different place.”

The first film was released in 2011 and earned generally positive reviews. The animated film holds a 72% Tomatometer score and 71% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Rio 2 faced mixed reviews, earning a 50% critics’ score.

For now, Disney has yet to announce Rio 3.
