Amazon delivery drivers have to deal with package thieves on occasion, but what happens when the package thief is an adorably furry friend? A viral video on TIkTok shows a man trying to deliver an Amazon package as a golden retriever greets him at door. He leaves the box at the customer’s front door, but he soon realizes that the dog has swiped the package from the porch.
Golden retriever treats Amazon package like a toy
On October 24, user 903omarion posted a TikTok video of a golden retriever stealing the Amazon package he was about to deliver. The 43-second clip has since garnered over 1.5 million views and received over a quarter-million likes.
The video shows an ordinary “day in the life of an Amazon Driver” as the man approaches a home with a wooden ramp that leads up to the front door. That’s when an unleashed golden retriever scurries around the house and, in a bundle of energy, happily runs toward him.
Trying to stick to his job, he walks up to the door and leaves the small package, taking a picture of the box to alert the customer of the delivery. However, the dog is too excited to have a stranger over that he skips over the box and knocks it over on its side. He tells the pooch to “sit,” though it does little to stop the dog from wanting to play.
Not wanting to engage with the dog further, the delivery driver gets into his vehicle and starts to drive away until he realizes that the golden retriever has taken the package in his mouth. That could get him into trouble if the customer finds the package misplaced. By the time he gets back to the home, he finds the box underneath the wooden patio where he also finds a stuffed animal. Apparently, this is one of the dog’s favorite spots to hide toys.
The delivery man tries to find a good spot to place the box and thinks about putting it inside the cooler but it’s still wet inside. He opts to place the package on the corner of the porch railing, though the dog could easily jump at it.
So instead of walking away from the home, he decides to play with the dog, running toward the vehicle so that the dog gives chase. The hope is that the dog forgets about the package altogether, but either way, the driver laughs about the incident and returns to his vehicle in high spirits.
It’s difficult to say how much trouble the delivery man would be in if the package was lost due to the dog taking it. Technically, once an Amazon package is delivered in a reasonable manner, it becomes the customer’s property. A photo of the box being on the front porch should suffice.
As one commenter wrote on the TikTok post, “Once I take that picture and I’m walking back, whatever happens to the package is none of my business, yk you got a dog and a package coming.”
However, it’s still not great for the delivery man to see the package get swiped by the dog, since the customer will likely report Amazon for a missing package. And the driver witnessed the box getting grabbed by the dog, so he would feel responsible if the package wasn’t delivered properly.
That said, if the homeowner is afraid that their unleashed dog might damage a package, the person can build a separate box for delivery drivers to drop packages in or designate a nearby Amazon Locker as a safe self-service area to pick them up.
