Spike Lee Says Donald Trump’s Allies Could Shut Him Out of Hollywood

Spike Lee fears his political views could limit his filmmaking opportunities following Paramount Skydance‘s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The filmmaker suggested that the Ellison family’s political ties to Donald Trump could affect his ability to secure future projects. He also addressed the backlash he has faced over his support for Palestinian rights.

During an interview with Variety, Lee discussed the Ellison family’s growing influence in Hollywood following the merger. The 69-year-old filmmaker responded, “You know… It might be one less place I’m going to be making films! I’m not hoping for that, but it could be. I don’t think it’s a crazy statement based on my politics and them guys.”

Lee also discussed New York Knicks owner James Dolan and his connections to Trump. Lee argued that Dolan could not force Knicks players to visit the White House. He also said he hoped the players would decline any invitation to visit.

The conversation also turned to the professional consequences of his support for Palestinian rights. He said he had received considerable hate mail and continued to face criticism over his views.

Lee also recalled a confrontation with a woman at a Yankees game. She filmed him while asking him to say, “F**k Palestine.” Lee identified the woman as Lizzy Savetsky and claimed she had previously stood outside his home with an Israeli flag before placing it in his mailbox.

He also raised concerns about the alleged mailbox incident, noting that tampering with another person’s mail can violate federal law.

The interview also addressed his views on the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups in Hollywood. When asked about actors such as Mark Ruffalo, who have faced criticism over their support for Palestinian rights, Lee discussed the potential consequences of speaking out.

Lee said, “Look, that lobby is very powerful and if you get on their list, they’re not going to make life easy.” He added, “But people have their beliefs, and they’re not going to bend down.”
