Spike Lee was recently captured getting into a heated altercation with a fan. The incident occurred at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
A viral video of the moment shows Spike Lee being held back by security personnel after a tense confrontation with a fan. The perpetrator was reportedly filming Lee while he was having dinner at the Legends Suite dining area of the New York ballpark, just ahead of the Boston Red Sox’s game against the New York Yankees.
“Why’d you come over to me?” Lee can be heard screaming at the fan in the video. Security staff had to step in to pull the filmmaker back from the perpetrator and defuse the situation.
Spike Lee was reportedly asked about Palestine while a fan filmed him
Fox Sports reporter Andy Slater heard from people sitting near Lee’s table that the perpetrator began filming the Malcolm X director and asked him about Palestine, which led to the altercation.
One person who approached Lee for a selfie reportedly asked him to say “F–k Palestine,” which angered the filmmaker, who then got up from his seat and searched for security. The viral clip also shows a man in a checkered blue sport jacket pointing at someone at a nearby table and telling them, “You’ve gotta go. You’ve gotta go.”
The heated exchange comes just seven months after Lee’s appearance at February’s NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, carrying a bag featuring the Palestinian flag and a traditional keffiyeh. His attire drew some criticism at the time, as the event marked the first time an Israeli-born player—Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija—participated in an NBA All-Star Game.
In an Instagram post on February 18, Lee clarified, “There has been some conjecture about what I wore to the games on Saturday and Sunday. The clothes I wore are symbols of my concern for the Palestinian children and civilians, and my utmost belief in human dignity for all humankind.”
The BlacKkKlansman director added, “What I wore was not intended as a gesture of hostility to Jewish people or to support violence against anyone, nor was it intended as a comment on the significance of Deni being an All-Star.”
