Collin Gosselin faced an emotionally intense challenge during his latest Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test challenge. The reality star drew on painful memories of his childhood while completing a combat exercise. His experience also highlighted his strained relationship with Kate Gosselin.
Collin confronts his painful past during a grueling test
During the October 29 episode, Collin and his fellow recruits participated in a controlled-aggression exercise. They were instructed to unleash their aggression during a combat exercise and stop immediately when ordered. DS Jason Fox explained the exercise’s purpose to the group.
“This task is about finding controlled aggression,” Fox told the recruits. He explained they needed to act like a “lunatic killer” before stopping. The exercise tested their ability to switch aggression on and off.
For Collin, the challenge became deeply personal. In a confessional, he connected his participation to his relationship with Kate Gosselin. “I’m here because my mother has taken a lot of things away from me,” he said.
“But this course is something she can’t take away,” Collin continued. He then shared the feelings behind his participation. “She took away my childhood, she took away my freedom — and I have a lot of anger,” he added.
Before beginning, DS Q encouraged Collin to channel those emotions. “This is your chance for revenge. Use that anger, use that rage,” he instructed. When asked whether his experiences still hurt, Collin answered, “Yes.”
Q then gave him another instruction: “When you see red, that’s your mom.” Collin subsequently screamed through the exercise, appearing visibly overwhelmed. DS Billy encouraged him to give the challenge everything he had.
After Collin stopped, Billy reminded him to breathe. “That was your decompression there. To release all those demons. Now, it’s done,” he said.
The episode coincided with the release of Collin’s memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood. In the memoir, Collin made several allegations of childhood abuse against his mother. He alleged that Kate confined him to a basement room during his childhood.
Kate has disputed parts of Collin’s account. She previously said decisions involving his care followed recommendations from medical specialists. Ahead of the episode, Collin shared competition photographs on Instagram. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option,” he captioned them.
