Jennifer Lawrence still vividly remembers the online storm she sparked with a candid hot take. Following her comments on a popular love triangle in The Summer I Turned Pretty, the 36-year-old had to deal with a significant backlash.
The Oscar-winning actress recently appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast. Walking down memory lane, Lawrence pointed out how choosing Gavin Casalengo’s character in the series turned her world upside down.
“I said that I was team Jeremiah. The level of hate that I got was higher than any controversy I’ve ever been involved in in my life,” The Hunger Games actor told Alex Cooper.
She further added, “I feel like I was rage baiting slightly because I did it with my friends. I’d be like, ‘I like Jeremiah,’ and they’d be like, ‘Ugh,'” Lawrence recalled. “I thought it was innocent. It was not. People were like, ‘You should die.'” Lawrence knew that fans did not prefer Jeremiah’s character. But she had no idea that it would spark such a heated debate.
Jennifer Lawrence’s pick put her right in the middle of The Summer I Turned Pretty debate
Jeremiah Fisher is one of the most important characters in the Prime Video series. He is a central character in the love triangle involving his brother Conrad and Isabel, aka Belly.
Their love triangle became a topic of debate and divided fans into Team Jeremiah and Team Conrad. With Lawrence picking up Jeremiah, it ignited a massive frenzy among fans.
Speaking on the same podcast, the X-Men actor stated, “I’ve been involved in a lot and I’ve pissed off the public many, many times. I’m old. I’ve been famous for decades. It never occurred to me that that would be the number one where people were just like, ‘I wish you had never been born.'”
Jeremiah is playful and charismatic, one year younger than Conrad and one year older than Belly. The two were childhood best friends before developing a romantic connection. However, their relationship eventually fell apart, and they called off their wedding after Belly realized she still had romantic feelings for Conrad.
