In an interview published in the November 2026 issue of Elle, Schafer discussed queerness, identity, and personal growth. The 27-year-old actress explained how her understanding of herself has evolved over time. She also shared why she decided to speak publicly about her surgery.

“Maybe it’s a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds [reality and ideology],” Schafer explained. She then revealed, “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much.” Her comments marked a rare public disclosure about her gender-affirming surgery.

Schafer also reflected on how she previously understood her gender identity. “For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself,” she said. She explained that she had wanted to make her previous body work because she found that idea meaningful.

However, her experiences eventually led her to reconsider that approach. Schafer described the tension between her philosophical ideas about queerness and everyday reality. She explained that medical transition became the right choice for her.

The actress also spoke about how she identifies today. “I’m a woman. I’m a girl,” she stated during the interview. She acknowledged that exploring identity can involve tension between personal beliefs and the surrounding world.

Schafer began her transition at age 14 and later became a prominent voice for transgender representation. She rose to fame playing Jules Vaughn in Euphoria and has since built a career in film and modeling. Her upcoming project, Blade Runner 2099, marks another major role.

During her recovery in early 2026, Schafer stayed in a rented apartment with support from friends and family. She recalled being limited to around 150 steps a day. Her candid disclosure offers insight into a deeply personal decision while emphasizing that every transgender person’s journey is different.
